It’s unrealistic to demand and expect the world to go net zero by 2025. This is what Extinction Rebellion, the activist group is proposing through their peaceful protests that ironically caused chaos on the streets of London with multiple blockades to major travel routes including Tower Bridge and Heathrow International Airport.
I believe Mother Earth will still exist 10 years from now, despite the prediction of complete annihilation by Roger Hallam, one of the founders of Extinction Rebellion who is a PHD researcher at King’s College London. If my intuition is wrong and the tsunami or all tsunami’s hit with raging fires and we go extinct like the dinosaurs, I’m sorry, I’ll be a goner like you. The care that’s gone into getting just the right pose for an Instagram selfie and making sure the best filters are used will be obsolete. Extinction Rebellion protestors don’t give a crap about Gucci or Chanel but those who feel naked without the adornment of a designer brand will go ballistic if told: no more flying, Uber or glamping.
I see it now, “Coachella Millennials vs. Druid Hippies. I’m not trying to be cynical. I’ve done totally unconventional things in the past like tantric sex workshops and filming a movie documentary while living on the farmland of a spiritual community that I’d define as a cult. There needs to be a realistic plan created that doesn’t terrify the inhabitants of earth. Instead, wakes them up to taking responsibility for their actions.
The Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit calculated that to go net zero by 2025, flying would need to be scrapped and 38 million cars (both gas and diesel) would need to be removed from the roads. In addition, 26 million gas boilers would need to be disconnected in six years.
A hundred years ago we didn’t have cars and electricity was a luxury. My family has one car. We drive under 7,500 miles per year. I turn off lights when I leave a room and do my best not to be wasteful of resources. These are small green actions that can add up if we’re all on board. I’m prepared to make personal sacrifices for the care of our planet if there is a global ruling via the collaboration of governments to lay out a specific plan that allows us to transition to energy efficient modes of travel that do already exist and can be built for a fraction of the cost of High Speed Rail and self driving cars.
I love Dame Emma Thompson for her brilliance as an actor who made a speech in the Extinction Rebellion pink boat parked at Oxford Circus. Emma are you ready to stop traveling in planes and cars in less than 7 years? Even when Kanye West and Kim Kardashian keep flying. Al Gore says: he offsets all his energy use. How?
Yes, we need to address climate change. It is indeed evident that there have been a crazy amount of wildfires in California and there are extreme weather conditions globally but gluing your hands to glass, getting arrested and doing a Hail Mary is not going to be an effective way to address our government leaders and counter the way we’ve collectively polluted the planet.
There are alternative transport and energy technologies available that can begin replacing our current transportation infrastructure now and be completed within 20 years. We can reverse the damage now by educating ourselves and speaking up at city council meetings and inviting neighbors and friends to join us. If there is a realistic plan presented and enough people speak up, then city by city, we can be more resourceful in how we use energy. Bill James, founder of JPods is taking action with The Solar Mobility Act to create an environmentally friendly physical internet. There are many other founders and organizations taking action too.
There has to be a better way to heal our earth than protesting and getting arrested. How can we effectively disrupt in cooperation and improve our environment without causing chaos to millions of people?
